Is Umbraco CMS the Best Fit for Your Project?

What is Umbraco CMS?

In the 90s, the first generation of websites started to appear. These were totally different from today’s websites because their design was simple and based on text. In 1993, web browsers started supporting images but the styling was still quite limited. 1996 was a year of change when Internet Explorer started supporting CSS (Cascading Style Sheets), which allowed for more advanced styling of websites.

The web content management revolution started in the late 90s, but the first recognisable name in this field came about around 2000. Drupal is one of the oldest content management systems (CMS) and was released in January 2001. This release marked the birth of modern CMS as, two years later, Umbraco CMS was announced.

Umbraco was based on Classic ASP (Active Server Page) and COM (Component Object Model) Object in VB.NET and .NET web services, but it has changed a lot in the past 16 years in response to how the internet has developed. Umbraco released Version 8 of their project in 2019, which introduces a new way of handling multilingual websites.

Why is Umbraco so popular?

Umbraco as a CMS is used by more than 500,000 websites, and the reason behind that is simple: it makes your work easier. Umbraco is special because of the community within it, which is growing fast and good at listening to what needs changing.

Umbraco’s active and friendly community is the core of its success. It doesn’t only help to improve Umbraco, it also helps with preparing a lot of packages like Plumber, Doctype Grid Editor or Redirects Viewer.

As the community around this awesome CMS is so active, Umbraco was able to release eight versions. The newest version introduces better support for multilingual websites as the demand for this feature grew. Umbraco Version 8 introduces Language Variants which have a lot of helpful features like:

  • Side-by-side mode – Editors working with the multilingual website are now able to compare content between two different languages, which could improve the time needed for translations.
  • Switching between languages in Preview Mode.

Content Apps were introduced in the newest version, which can be used to introduce additional information about your content from analytics, E-commerce statistics or even content health checks. There is a lot of potential with this feature, starting from options for managing SEO, up to managing external content that could be used on that page.

How does Umbraco CMS compare to WordPress CMS?

Umbraco has a lot of out-of-the-box features to support content management and content editing, but it is focused on giving you a stable base for your project. It is quite a different approach in comparison to WordPress, which tries to deliver you everything almost out of the box or with easy installation of plugins.

The CMS also supports extensions with the package system, but it is quite different from WordPress. WordPress is a system which allows almost everyone to install any plugin and in most of the cases, it will work. At the same time, this is why most of the websites based on that CMS are not fast and secure as plugins should be chosen wisely.

Umbraco solved that issue as the package system is implemented for developers, not users, avoiding the installation of packages by people who don’t have technical knowledge which ultimately causes performance and security issues.

Being designed for developers is one of the advantages of Umbraco. It is focused on delivering the best experience out of the box; this means flexibility. That is the reason why Umbraco always fits so well to different projects when WordPress needs a lot of tweaks to have the same experience.

When does Umbraco fit your project?

Umbraco content management system shows true power when you need to highly customise a website that supports a lot of features. Umbraco is very extendable, which makes it a perfect fit for a custom solution, as you are not limited by your CMS. Sitecore, an alternative CMS, comes with built-in personalisation, but what if your project doesn’t need that? In that case, Umbraco has the advantage over another available option; it is minimalist and doesn’t contain unnecessary features.

One of the additional times when Umbraco is a perfect fit is when you don’t want to spend thousands of pounds just for a licence. If you need a secure CMS which will not use all of your budget for maintaining security, Umbraco is a perfect choice as it goes under regular penetration testing and security audits done by third-party companies.

Do you need to use CRM (Customer Relationship Management) or a payment gateway? That means you’re looking for E-commerce, and Umbraco is the perfect answer. It supports two platforms, U-commerce and Vendr, which can perfectly fit your project’s E-commerce needs.

Do you need highly scalable CMS? Umbraco does the job, especially when you decide to use Examine on Elasticsearch. You can read more about Elasticsearch here.

Why choose Umbraco CMS?

Umbraco’s newest version is focused on improving the editor experience in the same way they were focusing on the developer experience for previous years. Umbraco is a perfect base for most projects as it’s flexible and scalable.

From an editor’s point of view, it’s an easy-to-learn CMS. It will support editors in the creation of content as GRID editor allows them to visualise content on-site, and the preview functionality allows them to see their website as it will be rendered. One of the best features of Umbraco is Infinite Editing.

As discussed in our blog post Umbraco 8 Latest Features, this built-in customisable feature enables you to create smooth workflows that support natural and frictionless editing flows of content editors, customers and developers.

This means that even if your content and your document types are in different sections of the Umbraco back office, you can make changes directly in the content you are editing.
